Child and Adolescent Psychology Service

Breathing Space is a child and adolescent psychology service based in Honley village. Our background in primary teaching and as psychologists with additional specialist training in a range of therapeutic models for children and young people makes us uniquely placed to be able to help support children and young people in school and other educational settings.

We have been providing a range of intervention packages in schools since 2016 supporting our more vulnerable pupils and often funded by pupil premium.

Ethos

We believe that all behaviour is communication, and this lies at the heart of everything we do at Breathing Space. All children deserve to be valued and accepted regardless of the challenges they may present. Challenging behaviour is an expression of unmet needs, and this philosophy has led us to develop a range of strategies to engage with young people to help them express those needs and to provide advice for schools on how best to meet them.

At Breathing Space, we know that academic learning happens best when we address the social and emotional development of students. The establishment of trusting relationships which allow children and young people to feel safe, understood and connected allows emotional development to happen and lasting positive behaviour change to take place. By spending time with students individually we can develop bespoke interventions and provide support to achieve the desired outcomes for students, their families, teaching staff and ultimately their future.

Aims

  • To support children’s emotional development, reduce behavioural difficulties and develop happier children.
  • To motivate children to feel valued, understood, and able to achieve.
  • To identify the emotional issues underlying behavioural difficulties and provide bespoke personalised support.
  • To help schools allocate Pupil Premium funding in line with Ofsted guidelines.
  • To save money. Many children’s emotional and behavioural issues can be reduced without the need for EP involvement. Breathing Space offers excellent value professional, experienced and appropriate interventions and will highlight the best use of EP time.
  • To save time – early identification and support prevents more costly interventions later on.
  • To promote the health and wellbeing of students, families, and staff.

Approaches used

Breathing Space interventions use age-appropriate strategies drawing on a range of psychological approaches including;

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
  • Mindfulness
  • Neuroscience
  • Person Centred
  • Positive Psychology
  • Relaxation

Core Services

All children’s needs and circumstances vary, therefore bespoke packages of interventions are offered based on 1:1 support for the student with teacher and parent/carer discussions to establish the most appropriate intervention or strategy in order to obtain the best results for the young person.

Although some behaviour management approaches can appear to present behaviour change, true and lasting change takes time, commitment, patience, support from those involved, and the engagement of the student to understand and adopt new strategies and skills.
